The Akwa Ibom State Government has banned cult activities in all parts of the state.

The proscription is contained in a new law known as ‘Cultism and other Violent Behavior Proscription Act 2018’ signed into law by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Signing the proscription order, the state governor, Udom Emmanuel said the measure became in view of the menace of cult groups operating in some local government areas of the state.

He said that the law which is to re-energize the existing laws already in place, became necessary as a result of recent cult related security problems in the three local government areas of Ukanafun, Etimekpo, and Ika.

He however explained that the law covers all the 31 local government areas of the state and not restricted to the three local government areas.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uwemedimo Nwoko acknowledged that cultism has become a serious cause of concern and the law empowers the governor to take such action to guarantee the security of lives and property in all parts of the state.

About 14 cult groups were listed in the proscription order.
