The 2018 Fifa World Cup opened in grand style for the capacity home crowd and President Vladimir Putin as Russia dismantled Saudi Arabia by 5 goals to nothing in the opening game of the tournament.

Denis Cheryshev struck twice, with Yuri Gazinsky, Artem Dzyuba and Aleksandr Golovin all getting in on the fun as Russia got off to the best start ever of a host nation on the opening day.

The much awaited 2018 tournament kicked off in Moscow after a brief opening ceremony attended by the Fifa President Gianni Infantino and the Russian Federation President Putin. Legendary Brazilian forward Ronaldo was on the pitch for the ceremony which saw performances from British sensation Robbie Williams, among others.

After the ceremony both teams got down to business and Russia wasted no time announcing their intentions.

Cheryshev got his first in the 43rd, capping it off in injury time and sandwiching Dzyuba’s goal.

Russia found a fifth deep into stoppage time, Golovin swiping in a freekick to complete the party in the Luzhniki Stadium.
