Sadiq Daba: Meet one of Nigeria's most professional broadcasters, actors

With an array of successful classic TV series like “Cockrow at Dawn” and “Behind the Clouds” to his name, Sadiq Daba is one of the greatest Nollywood actors.

Originally from Kano, Daba grew up in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He moved back to Nigeria at the age of 15.

Growing up, he wanted to be a broadcaster. He finally got a chance in 1968, when he met a certain Alifa Baba Hammed. The latter found him impressive and arranged for an audition at the Radio Television, Kaduna.


Since then, Daba has worked as a news anchor, reporter and editor at  RKTV, NTPC Lagos and NTA Lagos.

Well read and travelled, Daba studied at several educational institutions including the St. Edwards College, Sierra Leone, NTA/TV College, ABU: Mass Communication. He also went on various training tours to Germany, U.K. among others.


Daba officially started his acting career with his role as Bitrus in the 70s family drama,“Cockcrow at Dawn.” For the role which brought him into the limelight, he was given a weekly stipend of N3.60K per week.

His other films and soap operas include “Behind the Clouds”, “A Place like Home”, “Entreat,” “Duplicity,” “October 1,” “Soweto” and “Moment of Truth”.

Six years ago, Daba retired from NTA and decided to partner with his long time friend and CEO of Dasamal Television Network (DTN), Isiaku Aliya, for a show titled Sadiq Daba Presents.

Also an award winning actor, Daba was rewarded with an Africa Movie Academy Best Actor Award in 2015, for his role as Inspector Danladi Waziri in Kunle Afolayan’s “October 1.”

In 2016, he received the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the growth of the Nigerian film industry.


Daba is married to Bolaji Daba, who he met in Jos while she was still a student there [“Cockcrow at Dawn was shot in Jos].

They both have six children and six grandchildren.

On September 7, 2017, it became public knowledge that Sadiq Daba has Leukemia.

The talented veteran has now revealed that he lives on a drug called Gleevec, which costs about 1.7 million naira.

Although Daba gets the drug free-of-charge from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, courtesy of a foreign foundation, it is still very expensive to purchase off the counter.
